In Rwanda, we provided an early commitment to purchase, ensuring that through every stage of the grow season, farmers would have the security of knowing they could afford to invest in overhead costs like labor and maintenance. Meet Marcos: After growing up in a coffee family, he took a break from farming to study biology and become a teacher. Years later, Marcos returned home and bought back his family’s old farm, where he now puts his education to practice, producing some of Brazil’s best coffee. We trade directly with Marcos—who also still works as a teacher—and were able to purchase his entire harvest, a first for this specialty coffee farmer. As a result, Marcos had enough funds to purchase equipment that will help him grow his business, like a new rotary drier he’ll start using this year to speed up the drying process. Equipping coffee farmers with the freedom to invest in better equipment not only improves your coffee, but coffee for generations to come, allowing a sustainable future and higher quality of life for Marcos and his family.

In Nicaragua, the average interest rate for a loan is 27%. Most coffee farms taking these loans end up in a never-ending cycle of debt year after year, where producers can never earn enough to get ahead. To help break this cycle, we provided two farms with advance payment, freeing them from the need to take out these crippling loans and allowing them to cover 100% of labor costs on their own. The result? A 50% increase in profits for those farmers, not to mention a more sustainable, healthy, and well-paid workforce that now has the opportunity to dedicate more time to cultivating high-quality beans.
